This is the "ONLY" rescue/shelter for animals in Bolivia.

**********

Many persons have a strong bond with animals and Susana Carpio is one of these persons. Ever since she was a young girl she learned from her father to respect and love her pets. As she grew up, she constantly helped animals that were hurt, sick or took in stray puppies. This reality made her look for an animal protection group (1995), where she could help animals in a more efficient way. She was disappointed to find that there wasn't one institution that was willing to work actively and in a committed manner to help animals. In June 1995, she decided to put together a new group that started at first with three people who would go to a case a day. However, because the community got to know the work that was  being done by these three volunteers the demand for this kind of work grew rapidly.

What is INCAN AQUAYO CLOTH ?

The "Aguayo" has been a cultural textile used by the Aymaras and Quechua people that can be traced back 1000 years to its pre-Columbian origins.
It could be considered the sacred cloth of the Incan civilization.”

The early "Aguayo" cloth was totally made from llama and alpaca wool which were the only animals in South America with wool.  This changed somewhat when the Spanish arrived in South America.

The "Aguayo" is still used by the Aymaras and Quechua people in every day life throughout the Andean region of South America.   One will regularly see women carrying their babies or personal goods to and from the market in an "Aguayo" slung across their backs.  It is also offered as an “official gift” to government officials when public services such as running water are installed in a village or a suburb of La Paz.

Types of Aguayos in existence today:

  1.     Antique Aguayos found only in museums and private collections

2      Replicas of antique Aguayos that are made from natural materials and
dyes.  These Aguayos are very expensive and are hand made by local women

  1.    Synthetic Aguayos made from wool and cotton.  These ones are
machine made with synthetic dyes.  They are the ones you would see
regularly used by the local Andean people going about their daily lives.

Money raised from the sale of these coats goes directly to SOS ANIMALES rescue efforts, and the animals. The need is great in Bolivia and these people put every cent to good use. Please see the web site for SOS ANIMALES, and see for yourself these "Angels of the Andes" at work. Please be advised some of the rescue stories are graphic, and may not be suitable for younger children to read.

PLEASE NOTE: The ladies of SOS ANIMALES  set the price for the coats. They do NOT come from a "sweat shop" environment.

One side of each coat is the "Traditional Incan Indian Cloth"  the reverse side is fleece of the same base color or a color that compliments the traditional cloth. The workmanship on these coats is superb! The patterns on the rump match as do the pattern on the collar. (See 3 coat photo)  These coats are totally reversible. Collar lengths are either 9" or 14". Each coat has a  2" button hole opening at the base of the collar for easy leash hook up. The coats were made to my specifications and patterns.
