What is INCAN AQUAYO CLOTH ?
The "Aguayo"
has been a cultural textile used by the Aymaras and Quechua people that can be
traced back 1000 years to its pre-Columbian origins.
”It could be considered the sacred
cloth of the Incan civilization." The early "Aguayo"
cloth was totally made from llama and alpaca wool which were the only animals in
South America bearing wool.
This changed somewhat when the Spanish arrived in South America.The "Aguayo" is still used by the Aymaras and Quechua people in every day life throughout the Andean region of South America.
One will regularly see women carrying their babies or personal goods to and from the market in an "Aguayo" slung across their backs. It is also offered as an “official gift” to government officials when public services such as running water are installed in a village or a suburb of La Paz.
The Aquayo coats are like no others sold anywhere. We are pleased to bring them to you from the Andes Mts. of Bolivia, made by local women. These women pride themselves on quality workmanship, attention to detail, and pride in creating a quality garment from a centuries old fabric design.
